Welcome to Moving into Composition, a course designed to help you further develop your compositional skills by experimenting and playing with different ideas.
So often we feel we need to create the perfectly composed painting, but I hope to help you step away from that pressure and trust your instinct. Dropping the notion of having to create a masterpiece and instead working on quite a small scale, making little compositional studies. This approach will hopefully give you the confidence to take more creative risks, be instinctive and daring in your decision making, so you can expand your practice.
You will end up with a small booklet of compositional experiments and I will take you step by step through a bookbinding process. The booklet will then be something you can refer to when you are composing a painting and you might find that some of the studies you make become the inspiration for larger paintings.
So, this course references how I approach composition, which is often through the lens of a choreographer. I will share ideas around form, texture, rhythm, colour, movement, contrast, and more.
