AFTERNOON LIGHT

This painting is a response to a walk I took around the Wood Walk at Trelissicke, a National Trust property in Cornwall. I was particularly drawn to the shadows across the footpath, that I am sure was due to the strong light that bounced off adjacent river. Like many of my works, this is a memory rather than an actual depiction of a place.

Prior to adding any marks or paint I applied gesso and collaged on tape and paper to create texture. The fine liner marks were made on location, and on return to my studio I then added watercolour paint, using a variety of colours. I particularly like the way the watercolour reacts to the textured substrate. The whole process is very relaxed as the paint and ink is given its freedom, and the results can often surprise me.
