Blackcap

£120.00

This canvas depicts a blackcap, a small warbler also known as the “northern nightingale” in reference to its rich, melodic song. Traditionally a summer migrant, the blackcap was once associated with movement between continental Europe and the UK for breeding. However, in recent decades its behaviour has shifted. As winters in the UK have become milder, increasing numbers of blackcaps are now choosing to overwinter rather than migrate, taking advantage of garden bird feeders and more reliable food sources. This change in seasonal behaviour has coincided with a notable population increase, with numbers rising by 298% since 1970.
