MILL WALK (SOLD)
SOLD
Hicks Mill is very close to where I live in Cornwall. There is a path that follows the edge of a leat, and this painting depicts that. Above are the reaching branches of the trees that form a tunnel to walk through, and a bank to the left that has a sense of ‘funnelling’ you onwards and creating a desire in you to want to know what lies just around the corner.
Prior to adding any marks or paint I applied gesso and collaged on tape and paper to create texture. The fine liner marks were made on location, and on return to my studio I then added watercolour paint. I particularly like the way the watercolour reacts to the textured substrate. The whole process is very relaxed as the paint and ink is given its freedom, and the results can often surprise me.
