Song Thrush

£120.00

Song Thrush is an original bird painting by Cornish artist Simon Lewis Birch, inspired by a song thrush that sings in the trees across the road the studio.

The bird often returns to the highest branch of a familiar tree, using it as a vantage point from which to deliver its distinctive, repeated phrases into the surrounding air.

An old country name for the song thrush is the “thricecock”, a reference to its habit of repeating musical phrases three times. I love this sense of rhythm and repetition in its song, and the way a single bird can make itself so present within the landscape.

This small original painting is part of my Messengers collection, exploring birds, birdsong and our relationship with the natural world. For me, these paintings are about more than simply depicting a bird; they are about the experience of noticing, listening and connecting with the landscape around us.

Acrylic on canvas in a white wood frame.
