Winter Herald (Song Thrush)

The clear, melodic song of the song thrush carries through the winter months, a sound often understood as a promise of lighter, warmer days to come. In this work, the bird is held as a gesture of hope, a bright note within the quiet of the colder season. Yet this sense of optimism is set against a stark reality: the song thrush population in the UK has dropped by over 50% since the 1970s, and the species is now on the UK Red List. This decline is linked to intensive farming methods, reduced nesting sites due to the loss of hedgerows, and a diminishing food supply of snails and earthworms.
